Fifty years ago, engineers used 20 cases of dynamite to clear eight tons of rotting sperm whale from a beach at Florence, Oregon.

The blast, made famous by Miami Herald humorist Dave Barry, resulted in chunks of stinking flesh raining down over a wide area, damaging cars and terrifying spectators.
