Historic turnover of land
The title to the island of SISȻENEM (Halibut Island), near Sidney Island in Haro Strait, was turned over to the W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations last week by the The Land Conservancy of British Columbia (TLC) in a historic act of reconciliation.
It was the first time a land trust had voluntarily transferred land title to Indigenous people in Canada, according to the TLC which purchased the 3.9-hectare (9.67-acre) island for $1.5 million with the help of donors.
