Cabbage Isle access curtailed

Beginning April 15, 2025, Parks Canada closed the Cabbage Island campground, possibly for good, due to damage done to areas of the island which are culturally sensitive to First Nations people.

The park mooring buoys remain in use. As well, access to the moorage payment kiosk and pit toilet adjacent to the campground are permitted. Boaters are not permitted to bring pets ashore.

The campground is popular with sea kayakers, and the closure has raised concerns on paddling-focused West Coast forums online.

Parks Canada has reacted to these concerns by saying that its mandate is to “protect and present nationally significant examples of Canada’s natural and cultural heritage and… ensure the ecological and commemorative integrity of these places.”

The federal agency said its goal is to both maintain access and protect sensitive areas in a harmonious way.

“Unfortunately, in this case, public usage of Cabbage Island cannot be maintained without causing irreparable damage to the commemorative integrity of the site. The decision to close Cabbage Island to camping and day use was not made lightly but was determined to be an operational necessity in alignment with Parks Canada mandate,” an official said.
