Pod A5 returns to Broughtons
Driven from the Broughton Archipelago more than 20 years ago, likely by sonic harrassment devices fish farmers used to keep seals at bay, the renowned A5 family of orcas has returned.
“I had a hydrophone going into my house, so I was listening 24/7. Weeks went and then months went by and then years went by and they never came back,” said Alexandra Morton, an orca researcher. “It’s a sign of healing that they have decided its safe to go back in there.”
I am thrilled with the news of the Orca pod returning to their native hunting grounds. I hope there is enough food (salmon and seals) to sustain them, at least for part of the year. They are truly magnificent creatures that deserve our respect and protection.
