Billy Proctor didn’t seem to mind answering the questions about the Broughton Archipelago that Lynne and I emailed to him. And his answers, always prompt and to the point, usually included a twist that we hadn’t thought of.

Despite a lack of formal education, he was an encyclopedic source of information about the land, waters and peoples of the Broughtons, and he took that knowledge with him when he passed away on Tuesday at age 90.

Billy spent his life fishing and hand-logging throughout the area, and he was an avid beachcomber who amassed thousands of artifacts that he displayed in his famous museum at the community of Echo Bay on Gilford Island where he lived all his life.

He wrote several books about the Broughtons and about his life growing up in the region. He was a sweet man and a legend.
