Salish Sea slowly reopens

Please note that we stopped updating this blog post on July 5, 2020 so we could go off-grid cruising. Much of the information below and the status of marinas will begin to change almost immediately.

Canada and the US have agreed to keep their shared border closed to non-essential travel until July 21. This includes boat travel for recreational purposes.

The border was first closed at midnight March 20.

Meanwhile, on June 1, British Columbia started reopening provincial campgrounds and marine parks for overnight use. The layout of some campsites were changed to allow additional spacing, reducing the campground capacity. Some communal facilities such as shower buildings open with enhanced cleaning protocols. Overnight use of mooring buoys and park docks is also permitted.

Washington, which began reopening its state parks in May, maintains an updated list of parks open for daytime and overnight use.

Marinas and docks

The following is current information (until July 5) on the status of many marinas in the Salish Sea which normally offer moorage and other services to transient boaters.

Please note, this information is constantly changing and boaters should call ahead to confirm details before arrival.

Email sent to Port Ludlow slip holders 3PM, 24 March –

Immediately, and until further notice, the Marina Office will be limiting two people at one time within the confines of the marina store. The front door will be locked, but a simple knock between the hours of 10 am – 3 pm, Monday – Saturday, someone will be available to assist. The Fuel dock will be operating from 10am – 3pm, and also open Monday – Saturday. We kindly ask that you minimize visits to the marina office; our team is closely monitoring email and accepting phone calls. If possible, we ask that you use these methods as the first line of communication. WE LOVE SERVING OUR CUSTOMERS FACE-TO-FACE, BUT AS REQUESTED BY THE CDC, WE ARE PROMOTING SOCIAL DISTANCING.

The Marina Staff and I will ensure the marina facilities remain a safe and secure place to moor your vessel, while keeping ourselves, families, and our guests as safe as possible. Communication with the Marina can be done via phone and e-mail 24 hours a day. My cell phone number is 360-316-1162.

FUEL DOCK AND MARINA OFFICE HOURS:
    Monday – Saturday 10am – 3pm

What is the status of Port if KINGSTON and Port of Poulsbo and Port Of Brownsville?

  3. Dave says:

Port of Poulsbo just sent out this update – (25 March 1230pm)

    From Commissioner DeSalvo

As the Port of Poulsbo moves through this current emergency let me put forth what the responsibilities of the port are and the actions we are taking.

    – In Washington State, ports are the bridge between water, air, rail, road and are run by the public. It is our responsibility to maintain these essential access points as a governmental agency for the public. We have given emergency authorization to our port manager to ensure the Port can fulfill its responsibilities.

    – First for commerce / safety, this includes commercial fisherman, first responders, and other essential water-based activities that are continuing. We have a unique port with a tidal loading dock requiring no personnel to operate it (at the top of D dock) that we will maintain open we also have a fuel dock that will also remain open.

    — Second a number of responsible citizens in our region have chosen to socially isolate on their boats primarily on anchor. As a port, it is our responsibility to ensure these citizens have a safe place to access food, medicine, fuel, and dump their waste. The port will maintain minimal staff to continue the operation of the fuel dock, pump out station, marina maintenance, and dock moorage. We have stopped taking reservations for the transient slips, however if someone feels it is necessary to use a transient slip, they will be using the afterhours drop box for registration and payment.

    – Third we are considered a public park on E and F docks; due to the choke points to enter and exit the docks, we are asking that the public limit their use of the docks to water-based activities. Essentially asking if you are not getting on or off a boat or seaplane please keep the docks clear for those that are.

We will continue to keep everyone informed as we make through the next few months. It has been wonderful to see what we all already know, Poulsbo knows how to pull together, we have done it before, and we are doing it now. This will all come to an end and life will return to normal until then love, support and continue to serve your neighbors.

    Mark DeSalvo
    Commissioner
    Port of Poulsbo

    And I just got a new update/clarification from Port of Poulsbo (25 Mar. @ 1317) –

Our bathroom is closed to the public (WHICH INCLUDES GUEST MOORAGE)

  5. SV RasCal says:

As of today, Port Townsend closed their “walk-up window.” They posted a phone number to call. Kristian was very prompt in answering. I scheduled a splash by phone.

  6. CC says:

Port of Friday Harbor reports being closed to transient moorage as of March 25. See https://www.portfridayharbor.org/port-of-friday-harbor-closed-to-transient-moorage-airport-camping/

  7. Greg Parish says:

Mill bay just stopped all transient moorage to focus on long term clients, to keep contact to a minimal for those on their vessels.

Quaterdeck is actually open, noted as closed at the top.

Good stuff, lets keep this list going.
    Stay safe!

  8. Bruce Ochandarena says:

Very useful and timely information. Thanks for compiling and posting!

  9. Greg Parish says:

Quaterback answered the phone yesterday when I was verifying dock length for a client. 120′ max is their max. I told them that they were noted as closed and they said they will reach out and update this site. Double check, they are skeleton crew and I had a nice lady from accounts pick up.

  10. Noreen Light says:

Thank you for the compilation of information. We just bought our parks moorage pass and thought we would be quietly hanging out in the islands for a while, this spring. Not happening.
Still, if we’re going to be sitting in one place, we couldn’t ask for a better community of neighbors, and fabulous, caring staff. It is comforting to be right here at Port of Olympia Swantown Marina. We love our Swannies.

  11. John Bae says:

Thanks for info. That’s a ALOT of work. I was just moving my boat from point roberts to Canada(I’m Canadian ) and I spent three nights at cabbage island . The cell phone reception was good and there were 5 or so mooring buoys avail and no one was around

  12. Jay says:

What are the customs protocols for boats crossing the border (each way)?

  13. John Bae says:

The US Canada border closed to non essential visits sometime around midnight March 20. I went across the US border at PT Roberts a few hours before closing. There were a couple other Canadian boat owners there. Since we all didn’t know how long the border would be closed unpacked up ALL my crap , got water , food and left with no new home. I checked into cabbage island by nexus marine phone and they just asked me if I was sick and I said “no”. Then the stressful part was finding moorage since a bunch of Pt Roberts lefts suddenly left the marina. Downtown Vancouver is about usd 1000 a month for 40 foot slip. If you can find one

  14. Greg Parish says:

A mini update from us at Victoria International Marina, we are offering Covid-19 cleaning of vessels and with our spacious docks, you can stretch your legs and remain inside the secured Marina or go for a safe walk in the parks outside the gate. We have touchless provisioning being offered, delivered in Tesla X with its Biodefense filters on, scrubbing the air. This is being provided through our friends at Tesla Tours. https://www.teslatours.ca/ they are doing this city a great service by delivering food and spirits around for a minimal fee.

Winter rates are in effect due to marina facility access being limited during social distancing. https://vimarina.ca/latest-news/victoria-international-marina-covid19-concerns/
We are offering safe harbour with 1 gig up and down wifi connection

Stay safe and keep this thread going, I am sending it around.

  15. Drew says:

Thanks for all this valuable information. Will this site be updated on a regular basis, eg weekly?

  16. Dave says:

There are some folks commenting on FB groups that Blake Island SP bouys are open … these posters state that this information has come to the directly from WA SPs staff. You may wish to revisit the issue of Balke Is. with your contact as there seems some confusion (especially as the WA SP is stating generally buoys are open but no docks and no landing).

    • Jim Burgoyne says:

Oops, didn’t edit the listing for Blake Island to reflect they are open. My mistake will do that soon as I can.

  17. Patrick says:

FYI Chuck at Port of Port Townsend informed me they aren’t allowing overnight moorage. This wasn’t clear to me from their website (I can’t find anything saying Boat Haven suspended moorage, just found a clause for Point Hudson). The text on salishseapilot should probably be updated, the following led me to believe they were taking a similar stance as other ports:
“[Point Hudson]: guest registration/payments may be made by using the iron ranger located in the breezeway outside the office”
“All port offices are closed to public access, though business and operations continue during regular business hours.”
Chuck said emergencies only. Fuel dock is open though.

  18. FRANK HAVENS says:

Jim, first you start out saying State Park buoys are usable then, further down in the post you state ; “As noted above, all marine parks in Washington are closed for day and night use, and this includes mooring buoys and floats.” Which is it?

    • Jim Burgoyne says:

You’re right, Frank, I did. They are open. I failed to edit out the information at the top of both the San Juans and Puget Sound sections as the situation changed. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

  19. John L Readey says:

So with the May 5 re-opening of WA state parks, mooring buoys went from overnight use allowed, to day use only? I’m confused.

    • Jim Burgoyne says:

      Hi John,
I was also confused by this, but that was the information we were given by a park official. There did seem to be lots of uncertainty about mooring buoys on both sides of the border.

  20. Casey Haynes says:

I get from this, or at least it sounds like the boarder is open for boaters, I hope and believe that it is not…!…?

  21. Drew Kilback says:

Hi Jim. Would you please highlight the most recent updates so people don’t have to scroll/read the entire list to find where the changes are? Thanks.

    • Jim Burgoyne says:

      Drew,
Good idea. At the top of the marina list I will indicate those marinas with updates. Things are pretty slow now, but will keep the changes for at least 4-5 days, maybe longer. Thanks

  22. David S says:

Mill Bay Marina and Port Sidney Marina now (May 19)accept transients.

  23. David S says:

Your information is NOT up-to-date as of May 20 for some locations!

    For example:

    – Mill Bay Marina accepting transients as of May 19th
    – Port Sidney Marina accepting transients as of May 19th
    – Union Steamship Company marina accepting transients as of May 20th

  25. David S says:

Maple Bay Marina Transient Moorage (from their Facebook page) :
“We will start to accept overnight visitors in a limited way effective May 21, 2020. Reservations are required. We will not accept any “drop in” overnight moorage visitors. Short term “day visits” will be allowed as space permits.”

    Fuel dock open

  26. Genoa Bay Marina and Cafe up as of this Friday the 29th of May. Reservations only.
